Civil liberties groups and New York area Muslims are calling for investigations and hearings after a recent Associated Press report said that Muslims have been the target of joint NYPD/CIA covert surveillance in the 10 years since September 11, 2001, according to CNN.

“We need the (New York) City Council to hold hearings and to investigate these revelations,” said Ramzi Kassem, an associate professor of law at the City University of New York and supervisor of CUNY School of Law’s Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility project.  According to their website, CUNY CLEAR aims to address the unmet legal needs of communities in the New York City area that are impacted by national security and counterterrorism policies and practices.

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly confirmed yesterday that a CIA officer is working out of police headquarters, but said its role is advisory in nature.

  1. So logic tells me that if individuals are allowed to survey their homes with cameras and stuff to protect their homes and families, why can’t the govt do it too in an attempt to protect citizens?…sometimes I don’t get it. Can anyone shed some light here?
